The french bulldog has been around since the 1800’s. As with every “Pedigree” dog, they are a man made breed. The French Bulldog was the result of a cross between an English Bulldog and French ratters. Selective breeding from then on produced the standard we see today.

The gene responsible for determining the hair length is an autosomal recessive gene known as the FGF5.

A common argument between breeders and the public is where this gene came from? Some say they must be a cross and some say the gene potentially came from the french ratters.

A good breeder can provide you with a 5 generation pedigree certificate to show that they are in fact not a cross.

The French Bulldog resembles a Bulldog in miniature, except for the large, erect “bat ears” that are the breed’s trademark feature. The head is large and square, with heavy wrinkles rolled above the extremely short nose.
